Cockatoos

Demonstrative, sensitive, very demanding

The cockatoo is recognisable by its plumage, which has no green or blue (most often white, sometimes black), and by its mobile crest, which rises at the slightest emotion. It is a delightful companion — affectionate, playful, intelligent and sensitive — but very demanding: it needs several hours of your presence a day.

Its living environment

Aviary sizes are regulated (see the Swiss legal framework). Its beak is formidable: a metal frame is essential, the walls must be indestructible, and beware of the slightest rough edge, which it will lose no time in enlarging. The bigger the bird, the more destructive it is. As it can be very noisy, choose the position of the aviary carefully.

Its diet

A complete mix for parrots (nuts, seeds, cereals) forms the basis, supplemented each day with fresh food (greenery, vegetables, fruit) according to its tastes. Treats (biscuits, dried fruit, a little yoghurt, etc.) should remain exceptional.

Its health — what to watch for

The essential point to watch is psychological: deprived of contact, the cockatoo screams more and more to attract attention, then goes on to pull out its feathers (feather plucking) and sometimes to injure itself. These behaviours, very hard to correct once established, are the signal that it lacks attention, occupation or a suitable environment — do not wait to act.
