The bearded dragon (Pogona)

The most accessible lizard — but not without rules

The bearded dragon, or Pogona, is the most widespread pet lizard, known for being docile. But like many reptiles, keeping one may require a specific certificate of competence in Switzerland.

Its essential needs

  • A large terrarium with a temperature gradient and a hot spot at 38–42 °C.
  • UVB lighting is essential, and must be replaced regularly.
  • A mixed diet (insects + plants) that changes with age.
  • Check which certificate of competence is required before buying.

Key health points

  • Without a UVB lamp or without calcium, the bearded dragon cannot build a strong skeleton: his bones lose their minerals (this is metabolic bone disease). Signs to look for: a soft or deformed jaw, twisted limbs, trembling, difficulty moving. It is common and preventable — good UVB lighting and a calcium supply are essential.
  • Parasites of the digestive tract are common, especially in a recently acquired animal. Soft, foul-smelling droppings or weight loss despite a good appetite justify a test: treatment is simple once the parasite has been identified.
  • A shed that goes badly (skin that stays stuck, especially on the toes and the tail) almost always comes from an unsuitable humidity level. Retained skin can tighten around a toe and damage it: check the extremities during sheds.

A word from the Au Furet practice A Pogona that ‘waves’ one front leg in a circle is showing submission: this is normal behaviour, not a sign of illness.
